The air cleaner is one of the cheapest parts on a tractor, yet it protects the most expensive one – the engine. A blocked or damaged tractor air filter lets dust into the cylinders, cuts power and pushes up fuel use. This guide explains how the air cleaner works, the warning signs that it needs attention, and when to clean or replace it on popular Massey Ferguson and Ford tractors.

Why the Tractor Air Filter Matters
A diesel engine breathes a huge volume of air, and tractors often work in dusty fields, yards and dirt tracks. Fine dust that gets past the filter acts like sandpaper on cylinder liners, piston rings and valves. The result is worn rings, oil burning, loss of compression and, in the end, an engine rebuild. Keeping the air cleaner in good condition is one of the simplest ways to make a tractor engine last longer.
Oil-Bath vs Dry Air Cleaners
Tractors generally use one of two types of air cleaner. Check your operator’s manual to confirm which type your tractor has:
- Oil-bath air cleaners – found on many older tractors. Incoming air passes over a bath of oil that traps dust, then through a mesh element. The oil must be changed and the bowl cleaned regularly.
- Dry air cleaners – use a paper element, often with a safety (inner) element. Common on later tractors. Elements are replaced, not washed.
Signs Your Tractor Air Cleaner Needs Attention
- Loss of power, especially under load or when pulling implements
- More black smoke from the exhaust than usual
- Higher fuel consumption
- The engine is hard to start or runs rough
- The restriction indicator (if fitted) shows red
- Dust inside the intake pipe after the filter – a sign that dust is getting past the element
- A cracked housing, loose clamps, a split hose or a missing pre-cleaner cap
Any dust found on the clean side of the filter needs urgent attention, because it is going straight into the engine.

How Often Should You Clean or Replace It?
There is no single interval for every tractor – follow the manufacturer’s service schedule and shorten it in dusty conditions. As a practical guide:
- Daily in dusty work – check the pre-cleaner and empty the dust cup or dust valve.
- Oil-bath type – check the oil level and condition often; change the oil and clean the bowl whenever it is thick with sludge or at the service interval.
- Dry type – replace the main element at the service interval or when the restriction indicator shows red. Replace the safety element as the manual advises, usually every few main element changes.
- Every service – inspect the housing, seals, clamps and intake hoses for cracks or air leaks.
When to Replace the Complete Air Cleaner Assembly
On older tractors, the housing itself can be the problem. Replace the full assembly if the bowl or body is cracked, dented or rusted through, the seals no longer close properly, mounting brackets are broken, or parts are missing. A new assembly restores a proper seal so that all air passes through the filter. Popular replacements include:
- Air cleaner assembly GF-11131 for Massey Ferguson 240
- Air cleaner assembly GF-11135 for Massey Ferguson 375/385
- Air cleaner assembly GF-11132 for Ford 3610

Step-by-Step: Basic Air Cleaner Check
- Park on level ground, stop the engine and let it cool.
- Clean the outside of the housing so dirt does not fall inside when you open it.
- Remove the pre-cleaner cap and empty any dust.
- Open the housing and remove the element (or the oil bowl on oil-bath types).
- Inspect the element for holes, damaged seals and heavy dirt; replace if in doubt.
- On oil-bath types, clean the bowl and refill to the marked level with the oil grade in your manual.
- Wipe the inside of the housing, refit everything and check all clamps and hoses are tight.
Don’t Forget the Exhaust
Air goes in through the air cleaner and out through the exhaust. A rusted or holed silencer makes the tractor noisier, can let fumes reach the operator and may affect performance. If your exhaust is in poor condition, see the silencer assembly GF-11127 and the complete exhaust assembly GF-111222 for Massey Ferguson 375/385 tractors.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I clean a paper tractor air filter?
Most manufacturers recommend replacing dry paper elements rather than washing them, as cleaning can damage the paper and let dust through. Always follow your tractor manual.
What oil goes in an oil-bath air cleaner?
Use the oil grade stated in your operator’s manual, and fill only to the level mark on the bowl. Overfilling can draw oil into the engine.
Does a dirty air filter increase fuel consumption?
Yes. A restricted filter starves the engine of air, which can cause black smoke, lower power and higher fuel use.
